Petanque Boules and Accessories
A basic kit includes:

  • boules

  • jacks

  • ring

  • measuring tape or ruler

  • bag

Aside from jacks, most of these items will last a very long time.

Choosing the "right" Boule

There are two broad categories of boules, those approved for use in official competition (aka competition boules), and those that aren't (aka leisure boules).

Competition boules come in a range of diameters, weights, patterns, and materials, and must be approved for use in competition. There are general guidelines for selecting boule diameter based on hand size, with additional considerations depending on whether you are a "pointer" or a "shooter". Pointers tend towards smaller, heavier boules with some patterning, while shooters tend to opt for larger, lighter boules. It's safe to say most players use something around 73-75mm in diameter, and 680-710g. As for choice of material, manufacturers will have you believe there is considerable benefit for one material versus another. The degree to which that is true is a matter of opinion. Regardless, it's nice to have choices - so get what makes you happy.

Leisure boules are a slightly less expensive option than competition boules. These boules are not approved for official competitions and may only come in one size, weight, and pattern. You may find they are fine for social play, but bear in mind that competition boules are required to play in many tournaments.

  • Pétanque America - This is the "go to" vendor for pétanque boules and accessories in the US. They are a small business owned/operated by players passionate about pétanque. They're great people and are always willing to go the extra mile. Can't recommend them highly enough.

  • PétanqueShop - This is a large retailer in the UK. They carry many brands of new and used boules as well as an extensive line of clothing and accessories. They ship to the US but rates are significant so your total cost is comparable to that at Petanque America for similar items.

  • Obut, MS, Boule Bleu - These are a few of the major manufactures of pétanque boules. They all have an online store and will ship to the US. However, once shipping is factored in, the cost to your door is comparable to Petanque America for similar items.
